Fashion Wisdom: A Sit Down with Icon Betty Halbreich

Betty Halbreich has been working at Bergdorf Goodman as a personal shopper for decades.

Three and a half at that!

For 36 years, she's seen fashion evolve, repeat itself, and has helped countless shoppers on their style journey. Actress Lena Dunham is working with HBO to develop a comedy series that will focus on Halbreich's memoir, Secrets of a Fashion Therapist: What You Can Learn Behind the Dressing Room Door. The two women sat down to chat at a Bergdorf hosted event with about 50 women in attendance. Keep reading to see what questions the fashion legend answered.

Lena Dunham isn't taking home any fashion awards these days, but she embraces the fact that she doesn't have to...That's brave in her industry. It really is something to admire, which is telling people to be themselves and an individual. She doesn't apologize for being herself and can admit when she doesn't get it quite right....

"I'm not interested in taking on the fashion world or taking them to task on their morals or if models are too skinny. I'm more interested in how to be myself—and maybe that's narcissistic."

And in response Halbreich replied...

"It doesn't really matter what you wear if you are confident. It is really how you walk through life."

"Scatter My Ashes At Bergdorf's. Lena doesn't want to be dressed by me...nor should she need to. She's fine just as she is."

Here's some of the questions that the women in the audience asked...
Q: What is one staple I should invest in this fall?
A: Beautiful tops, because “people perceive you top-down,” explains Halbreich. “I love the luxurious shirts old-Hollywood actresses wore, like a silky button-down with a small bow or long pussy bow.”
Q: What tailoring tricks make clothes more flattering?
A: “I suggest removing hip pockets on pants, which is slimming, and taking in shoulders to conform to your shape.”
Q: Help! I need a versatile coat.
A: “It’s a black or navy peacoat, with two or three buttons, no contest. You can dress it up or down.”
Q: I'm looking for a professional bag. Any ideas?
A: Get a monotone handbag (inspiration: Saint Laurent Sac de Jour) “that’ll fit essentials—do a bag fitting at the store, like you would a dress fitting.”
Q: I need classic pumps with a practical heel.
A: “Manolo Blahnik BBs in neutrals—black, beige—are my safe harbor.”
Q: The best piece of advice you give clients?
A: “Use a three-way mirror. It’s important to see all angles.”
